This Zen table came into life after many times looking at this beautiful plank of silky oak and wishing that it didn’t have this gnarly end on it.
So, after I had cut as much of the good length out, this ugly split end had a balanced look and with a bit of work could be just the thing to turn in to a low table for my chakra meditation chairs.
From local sourced silky oak and a donated off cut of Huon pine for the butterfly wedges, it really came to life. So much so that I thought it deserved more than to spend it’s life all the way down there on the floor, so with the addition of a wall plate it is hung like art. On the wall when not in use and easily lifted off the wall to be put into use.
This piece taught me a good lesson. The longer you have your timber sitting around, the more often you look at it, the more you really become connected to the material, the more the material will speak it’s will to you. From an off cut destined for the fire to a piece of useable hung art...
