Designed and hand-crafted in the marvellous landscape of Noosa’s hinterland, it is little surprise that these beautiful pieces are full of spirit. Made from local sub-tropical timbers such as blackwood, silky oak, silver quandong, red ash, and spotted gum, they spring from the studio of Ross Annels. Ross has won many awards and international recognition, as well as a Melbourne-based PhD scholarship in design, over a productive ten years in furniture making and growing timber on his Sunshine Coast property. The work evolves from Ross’ passion for the many craft and design movements around the world. These skills along with the beauty of Noosa’s landscape and the soul of the artisan reside in every piece. The furniture inhabits its space with both grandeur and ease, offering a playful contemporary feel to every home or office. Ross is a designer and maker of contemporary furniture, specialising in fine chairs, carefully crafted to fit the body and to enhance modern and traditional interiors. Ross makes furniture to order and commission for Australian and international clients, combining traditional fine furniture making with innovative contemporary designs. Ross designs and makes his furniture from a small rural property near Cooroy in the beautiful Noosa Hinterland, in a well equipped workshop using fine furniture making techniques, with a combination of hand and machine tools. 1- A strong environmental concern has lead me to work with: timbers sourced from sustainably managed resources, small sections of timber using minimal forms, and experimental techniques using plantation timbers. I use cold lamination and steam bending techniques that provide design freedom without the use of large section timber 2 - A commitment to body comfort through the ergonomics of chair design and use. As a result of daily computer use and a sore back from using office chairs, I have been making "body-fitted" chairs and exploring the use of forms that encourage "active sitting" and that provide the necessary minimal lumbar/thoracic support. 3 - Biomorphic designs. A fascination with sculptural, biomorphic forms as functional seating, emerging from my zoological training. Ross offers one-on-one studio master classes. These can be combined with a stay in a two bedroom unit in a Noosa resort. Ross also provide steam bending and laminating services to other designers, makers and specifiers. Ross Annels, his partner Tamsin Kerr and their children Katerina and Anika have been work to plant rainforest trees on their property, and host occasional studio concerts. You are welcome to visit the studio and workshop by appointment, or to visit Ross at the Eumundi Markets on Saturdays. Work can be purchased by cash, credit card, cheque or direct credit.
