Matthew Harding is an established furniture designer/maker, wood carver and sculptor from Australia with over twenty years of experience working in wood and arts related fields. His works encompass large-scale public sculpture, furniture design, fine art exhibitions and lecturing.

Description of the Presentation:

Furniture design is for me a playground for manipulating a wide range of materials and processes, forging links between industrial and traditional craft. To this forum I bring my aesthetic influences, which stem from the natural world and geometry,

A trade background has led to the integration of industrial processes within my furniture design, including the 'Concentric' series, featuring laser-cut and CNC-routed components. The intention of this series was to orchestrate a theme played out by a machine.

Whereas this body of work dealt with my limited knowledge of simple CNC programming, I feel the significance of computer-aided design is critical to our survival as designers and makers of furniture. Historically there have been cycles of evolution within our field brought about by new materials, production methods and thinking. Computer aided design is the new revolution which is restructuring the way we approach and think within our field.

Harding's aesthetic influences are from the natural world and geometry. He views his art as a playground for manipulating a wide range of materials and processes, forging links between cutting edge technologies such as laser cutting and computer controlled routing to more traditional craft based skills such as carving. Harding has exhibited his art extensively in Australia and overseas and has received numerous grants, commissions, and awards including the 2003 artsACT Creative Arts Fellowship. Harding was also awarded a Churchill Fellowship to research carving, sculpture, and furniture design in Europe in 1998.
